Best show on Earth. The U.S Congress Circus.....
59Everytime I get my daily news it just puzzles me on how the Congress of the United States has become a circus which is full of clowns that do not hold the best interests of the american people at heart. It appears that nowadays it has become more important to remain loyal to a political party's agenda then feeling the pulse of the people.
If our founding fathers would look at this fiasco today they would be pulling their white wigs off their head. This political bickering has to stop in order to get things done in America.
Sure we live in a country that prides itself in freedom of speech and a global example of modern democracy but when did it become the country of I don't care what you believe or say, it's my way or nothing!!!!!!
Unfortunately that is what the congress and its elected leaders have become.
Unless you just got back from the International Space Station you know that the country is going through one of its toughest times in our lifetimes and unfortunately the people we chose to go speak in our behalf in Congress are too busy playing politics.
The democrats took a good whooping this past November all thanks to themselves because they allowed the Republicans to sit on the sidelines and do nothing. It was a great strategy that worked because the Republican blocking strategy made the democrats look unproductive. Most of the american people fell for the trick and voted them in. It's no secret that i'm not a fan of the republican party and its views. Well the views themselves are not bad, but I think mainly the hypocrisy of the party is what I really can't stand.
Leading up to the past November elections the Republicans begged for fiscal discipline. They screamed at the top of their lungs that spending was out of control and it had to stop and at the same time they are begging to give a tax cut to millionaires and billionaires that unfortunately the president has agreed to extend for another 2 years because Republicans were gonna let the tax cuts expire for the people who make 250,000/year or less. Republicans block everything to add nearly 1 trillion dollars to the already bad deficit. What happened to fiscal discipline. Where is the Tea Party now yelling for cutting spending? What? I cant hear you guys!!!! Oh thats right the Tea Party is not saying anything because the ones that want to spend the money now are the Republicans. Hypocrisy at it's best.
I understand the President in making the deal. He has made an unpopular decision in the interest of the middle class. The Republicans claim that the tax cuts will help those making 250,000 or more per year because it will help in creating jobs. Has the Republican party forgotten that when they were in control and under Pres. Bush even with these tax cuts the country was losing millions of jobs per month and since Pres. Obama was sworn in there has been a steady decrease of jobs lost throughout the years. Let the graph below speak for itself.
I blame the Democratic leadership for not being bold enough to stand up to the Republicans and confront them on every issue with the same arrogance the Republicans showed. I stated above that it would be nice for the political bickering to stop to get things done but I believe the democrats should have given the Republicans a taste of their own medicine. The Republicans have always shown no interest in working together with democrats. Mitch Mcconnell publicly stated that his main goal was to make the President a one term president. Where are the people of Kentucky? They should be telling Mcconnell that his main priority should be to lower the 9.3% unemployment in his state. Everyone one but the Democrats see that Republicans don't care about moving the country forward because if they did, than they would put their differences aside and work with Democrats. For months leading up to the November elections Republicans were very vocal on not compromising with Democrats about anything and still Democrats continued to extend the hand for bipartisanship and it keeps being slapped away by the Republicans. The President sat down with the leaderships of both parties and everyone came out saying that the talks were constructive. I don't know how constructive they were because the next day following the meeting the Republican Senators all signed a letter stating that they were going to block all legislation until the tax cuts for the wealthy are agreed upon. In other words, we dont care about nothing else unless the wealthy americans get their tax breaks. This is the kind of attitude that Democrats should have displayed all this time when they had control of the Congress. Democrats should simplify the bills and stop attaching them to bigger legislation which gives the Republicans an easy reason to vote against them. For example, Democrats should of had two votes on the senate regarding tax cuts. One vote for the 98% of americans who make less than 250k/year and one vote for the other 2% that make more than that. This would have clearly laid out the priorities of both parties and it could have helped in unmasking the republican agenda which is driven by millions of dollars which are pumped by special interests groups. Unfortunately Reid now is running around like a chicken without a head and trying to get bills to get voted on to show the american people that Republicans do not want to move this country forward. Well guess what Reid, TOO LATE!!!!!! Reid and Pelosi should have been doing this months ago. The damage is done and thats what Democrats get for trying to be the nice guys.
This past week the bickering is continuing and the american people are the one's paying the consequences for this political circus. The Republican party voted against the 9/11 Health Care Bill which would have provided medical care to Ground Zero workers who became ill and it would have opened a compensation fund for those who are ill or have died. The saddest part about this bill is that it was rejected eventhough it would have been paid for. This bill would not have added to the deficit but republicans didn't care and they voted against it. What fault do the families and victims of 9/11 at Ground Zero have? But since Republicans pledged to not vote for anything regardless of how it would help their constituents, these families and victims get nothing because politics is more important than the reality people face in this country. The Dream Act and Don't Ask Dont tell were also shut down as well due to the Republicans wanting to place more money in millionaires and Billionaire's pockets.
I really do hope that things change in the coming two years. I really do hope that businesses hire and the unemployed start working again since the tax cuts are meant to do just that, supposedly. I really doubt that it will happen. I will guarantee you though that if the tax cuts don't work and the country is till losing jobs, you can rest assured that the President will get the blame from Republicans for not doing enough. But on the other hand if the country continues to show the progress that it is showing now and the economy shows signs of life, the Republicans will take all the credit in the world for an economy that they tore apart in the first place when they were in power and had the majority.
Everyone talks about reforming everything lately and I think one thing that needs major reforming is term limits for the Congress. These career politicians are worrying more on how their decision making will affect their poll numbers when in comes to re-election instead of doing whats right for the country and it's citizens.
Unfortunately in this circus the clowns are performing but nobody is laughing

I like your hub, I read the whole thing and I seldom read an entire hub. I also have a couple of hubs on this issue of the congress etc. I think mine are a little more angry but then someone has to get ticked off. Maybe something will change. Thanks for a good take on the situation.

Good Hub. I do not think that it is just the States. All over the World there seems to now be a feeling that if the people elect you, they are giving you a blank check.
